The old Amtrak depot at Chillicothe
has seen many trains pass, as well as serving many duties.
A one time crew change point,
the depot served as crew quarters during layovers.
It has been the passenger
depot serving everthing from Amtrak's Southwest Chief to Santa Fe's Super
Chief.
Also, the depot was
home to the headquarters of a shortline group,
the Pioneer Railcorp
until they moved to bigger and better facilities by the Greater Peoria
Airport.
Today, the depot stands
empty, with BNSF MoW crews based out an adjacent steel structure.
But it still makes a great
place to spend the day and watch the parade of fast moving BNSF piggybackers.
A brand new BNSF C44-9W banks
through the super-elevated S curves in Dahinda, IL as they approach the
Spoon River bridge.
Dahinda is a great place
to shoot all day long. In the morning, there is this shot down
in to the cut on the west edge of town.
Just one caution,
trains approach from both ways are practically silent and very fast.
Be extra careful when crossing tracks.
Here a westbound intermodal
rolls across the Spoon River bridge at track speed waking up the tiny town
of Dahinda.
Here is the afternoon
westbound shot coming off of the quite impressive bridge over the Spoon.
